guatemala places of intrest guatemala places of intrest::It is the capital of the mayan empire.
The old capital during the spanish colony, is a charming colonial city only 20 mi.
West on the road to quetzaltenango.
There are shuttle vans from the airport.
Here you can arrange day tours to visit lake atitlan and chichicastenango.
Lake atitlan is a beauriful high altittude lake nested between volcanoes and surrounded by picturesque native indian villages.
Panajachel, on the edge of the lake, has nice hotels and lodges.
Colorful traditional clothing brighten the sights.
Chichicastenango is the largest native indian city in the americas.
The center of town holds a traditional market and the church shows its blend of christian and native indian rituals.
There is only one hotel there, so plan to make it a day trip, or make reservations ahead of time.
It is the second largest city in the country, with a more developed cultural agenda than the capital.
A city with traditional architecture, seated almost 8,000 ft.
From december through february, the days are quite warm, but the temperature drops dramatically during the nights.
Consider it will take much longer to get there than the distance itself, as the twolane road winds through beautiful mountains.
The road is constantly under repair due to landslides.
If you rent a car, do no not drive in the highways at night for any reason!
